A zebra crossing could be installed on a road in Northfleet in a bid to reduce the number of pedestrians being hit by cars.

Kent County Council is proposing to install it in Vale Road, near the junction with Colyer Road.

Vale Road has seen a number of crashes, four of which, KCC says, involved pedestrians.

It is being proposed because of the high number of people using the street, particularly students going to nearby Northfleet Technology College.

A consultation was carried out between June 21 and July 19.

One letter of support was received and one objection.

Meanwhile, KCC councillor Bryan Sweetland has proposed reducing all three 50mph speed limits on the A227 to 40mph.

The first two areas are on the Wrotham Road between the A2 bridge and Istead Rise, and north of the junction with Park Hill, Meopham, and south of the junction with Arcadia Road, Istead Rise.

The third spot is on the Gravesend Road between the A20 bridge and Harvel Road, Vigo.

The A227 is a busy route, linking the A20 with the A2, and serving villages in and around Vigo, Meopham, Culverstone and Istead Rise.

Kent Highways does not support the idea because of Department for Transport guidelines on where a 40mph zone is acceptable, and Kent Police has also voiced its disapproval.

A report before Gravesham council, which is merely noting the idea, says: “Having undertaken a number of traffic counts along the A227, vehicle speeds were found to be well below the posted 50mph speed limits, showing that the current 50mph speed limits are well observed and that the vast majority of traffic is complying with them.”
