There’sss sssome offally ssstrange sssustenance at a butchers in Gravesend – python meat.
JM Danslow in Windmill Street, is bringing a bit of variety to the dining tables of Gravesham, and that’s no misteak, with meats including camel, water buffalo, zebra, kangaroo, elk, ostrich and portioned crocodile.
Shop manager Scott Cassettari says he’s also got access to any meats you can dream of, whether it be a llama loin, a frog fillet, a bit of elk, some snails or even horse.
The 44-year-old said: "You wouldn’t know the difference really and it’s really good for you. It’s low in fat and high in protein.
"Kangaroo for instance, it’s not my cup of tea but over in Australia it’s normal to them – it’s like having a bit of steak over here."
The butcher’s has been in the town since 1849 and boasts it has only been closed for two weeks over the course of 163 years.
Mr Cassettari, of Echo Square added: "We can order in anything you want, even squirrel. We just had an order from Canterbury barracks and they had 20 packs of each of the meats. Even for Christmas, instead of having a joint of beef, you could have some kangaroo."
Chefs at Howe Barracks spent £1,500 on a bulk-load of exotic meats for a lavish ball for squaddies.
Soldiers at the Canterbury base dined on camel, zebra, kangaroo and crocodile as they celebrated the Battle of Balaclava.
The Gravesend Messenger team gave kangaroo, water buffalo and crocodile a go. Reaction was mixed.
