A town centre's streets are flooding with colour and celebration as the Sikh festival of Vaisakhi gets underway.

Thousands of people have flocked to Gravesend today to participate in festivities which celebrate the creation of Khalsa.

It has attracted both followers of the faith and spectators alike to celebrate the coming together of Sikhism.

Though the festival officially took place globally yesterday, the town's celebrations were not held until today.

The procession, known as Nagar Kirtan, started at about 11.30am at the Guru Nanak Darbar and made its way around town before circling back to its starting location, where a funfair and entertainment await attendees.

The festivities are open to anyone, with Gravesham Borough council leader John Burden and Mayor Peter Scollard joining the numbers for the celebration.

The police, council, fire crews and ambulance crews will be in attendance all day supporting the parade.
