Drivers get to grips with new Gravesend road system

centre of Gravesend

Drivers and pedestrians in
Gravesend woke up to a new road system on Monday morning when a
one-way street was reversed.

Cars used to carry straight on into
New Road from King Street, avoiding part of the one way system
along Clive Road.

Now drivers are being told they
cannot drive along New Road, unless they are making store
deliveries, and even then they can only get into New Road by
turning right from Darnley Road, before leaving by Stone
Street.

The
changes mean more cars now have to turn into the one-way system at
Clive Street from Stone Street.

Gravesham council officials were on
duty at 6am to warn people at King Street of the changes. Most
drivers seemed to cope but there were several queues building
up between 8am and 9am at the junction of Stone Street and Clive
Street (pictured).

The changes are part of the town
centre improvements in Gravesend, which will include a new public
square outside the Civic Centre and a covered bus station and car
park in Barrack Row.

Sarjit Sangha, head of commercial
services for Gravesham council, said: "By reversing the access to
New Road, it will allow the new bus interchange to function
properly as you cannot have cars clogging up the town near the bus
interchange.

"Another reason for this is that
emergency services, especially the fire service had told us they
had problems getting down New Road when cars were parked
there."
