Drivers will have to take a new route through Gravesend’s one-way system because of work to create a civic square.
Traffic which passes in front of the civic centre will be re-routed to the rear of the building once construction starts on January 24.
Albert Place, the road between the council offices and the old sensory garden site, will be closed to motorists in phase 1 of the town’s £75 million transport quarter scheme.
Traffic which previously turned right out of Lord Street will instead turn left up Windmill Street to Woodville Place, before turning right onto Wrotham Road to rejoin the one-way system at the other end of the closed Albert Place.
The changes pave the way for a new pedestrianised area to be built between the council offices and the town centre.
