Ebbsfleet suffered FA Cup heartache at Stonebridge Road on Thursday night after losing their first round replay in stoppage time of extra-time.
It was Kent-born Sammy Moore who scored the winner, and it was he who had earlier rescued Wimbledon with an injury-time goal in normal time, as they trailed the match 2-1.
Fleet were behind early on, but Ashley Carew levelled the scores from the spot, before putting his side ahead minutes later with a superb strike.
Fleet held their lead until the final seconds of the match but with victory in their grasp former Dover man Moore struck for Wimbledon in injury-time to send the tie to extra-time.
With penalties looming Moore then hit the winner to break Fleet’s hearts with a goal at the death.
Fleet boss Liam Daish said: "It’s very hard to take but sometimes its not meant to be. The timing of the two goals was unbelievable really.
"I don’t think the lads deserve to be out of the FA Cup because they were magnificent. Wimbledon didn’t just get out of jail once, they got our of jail twice."
Wimbledon, top of the Blue Square Bet Premier, had taken a ninth minute lead when Ryan Jackson’s cross was headed on by former Gillingham player Rashid Yussuff and into the path of Mark Nwokeji, who nodded home from close range.
Nine minutes later and Liam Daish’s side had turned the tie on its head. A penalty got Fleet back on level terms just two minutes after conceding.
Tom Phipp was fouled in the box by Andre Blackman and Ashley Carew fired into the bottom corner to level the scores.
With 18 minutes on the clock Fleet went ahead. Wimbledon failed to deal with Craig Stone’s cross, the ball fell to Carew, and he expertly bent the ball around the keeper from the edge of the box.
Yussuff went close with a shot from distance on the half-hour mark for the visitors, while at the other end keeper Seb Brown saved well, to deny Carew from completing a first-half a hat-trick just before the break.
With ten minutes of the second half gone Danny Kedwell missed a fantastic opportunity for Wimbledon, with keeper Preston Edwards stranded, but he turned the ball over the bar from infront of goal.
With Fleet on the verge of winning the match in normal time Wimbledon struck a stoppage-time equaliser when Moore got on the end of a looping cross in the 94 minute to level the scores.
Wimbledon’s Luke Moore, a member of Fleet’s 2008 FA Trophy winning side, was denied in first half extra-time by a great save from Edwards.
With half an hour of extra-time already played Wimbledon’s Moore found himself in the clear, as Fleet’s defence were caught out by a ball over the top, and he chested the ball down before firing home the winner.
