An emaciated and neglected pony has been found dumped by the side of the road.

The animal was discovered in Cobhambury Road, Cobham, with a rope and clip wrapped round its head on Friday morning.

It was spotted by a reader, who does not want to be named.

The 36-year-old told the Messenger: “As we drove up the lower part of Cobhambury Road, we noted someone had fly tipped more rubbish at the start of the track leading up to the Cobham Estate.

“What we initially thought was rubbish, we realised was a actually a dead horse. I got out of the car to make sure it was dead and not just escaped and injured.

“The horse was laid on the gravel, half on it side with its head laid on the ground.

"A horrid stiff old rope was wrapped around its neck behind its ears and around its face a couple of times."

The RSPCA is now investigating and witnesses are being sought.

An RSPCA spokesman said: "RSPCA Inspector Ray Bailey is investigating the grim discovery and has appealed for help in tracing the owner of the pony."
