LITTLE Jamie-Leigh Harrington, the pink princess who captivated us all and captured the hearts of the Gravesham community, has died.
Jamie-Leigh passed away at her home in The Fairway, Gravesend on Tuesday, September 2 after a courageous two year battle with a terminal disease - just days before she fulfilled a dream to go to Disneyland Paris with her parents Lisa and Jamie, and three siblings Sian, Rhea and Owen.
The 11-year-old, who was diagnosed with Lymphangiomatosis just two years ago, contacted The Messenger in November 2007 after vandals wrecked a display of Christmas lights and decorations which her family , fearing it would be her last, had put up early. Sadly, it was to be Jamie-Leigh's last Christmas.
But although yobs wrecked the display just days before her 11th birthday, they were defeated in the end by a generous community of caring people who were deeply touched by her heart-rending story.
Armed with Christmas lights, silhouettes, inflatables, a tree, and even real snow, around 200 volunteers came together to transform little Jamie-Leigh’s front garden.
No corner was left untouched and no detail overlooked. In just four hours the front garden was transformed into a winter wonderland, complete with real snow, a huge toy reindeer, gigantic balloons and Santa himself. Before and following the magical event, well-wishers from all over the UK and the rest of the world contacted The Messenger with kind donations and stories of encouragement from other sufferers.
Sadly Jamie-Leigh's story never had the fairytale ending we were all hoping and praying for.
Sleep tight Jamie-Leigh, from all at The Kent Messenger Group.
The Messenger would like to hear from anyone who knew Jamie-Leigh throughout her short life. Whether you were a close friend, or even just saw her in Gravesend town centre while out shopping - we want to hear your tributes.
Funeral details and full tribute in Gravesend Messenger on Thursday, Sept 11.
