I have seen many patients with headaches over the years.
A lot of them may think the worst but it is very rare for a headache to have a serious cause such as cancer.
The most common causes of headaches are related to dehydration, stress (tension headaches), medication side effects and migraine.
If you are suffering with constant headaches try and do the following before seeing a GP: Make sure you are drinking enough water daily, reduce caffeine intake - too many people are drinking far too much tea/coffee which causes headaches, palpitation and anxiety - get an eye test, If you are taking medications look if side effects include headache and consider if chocolate, cheese, red wine etcetera is triggering migraine.
One must also remember painkillers if taken daily for many weeks can actually start causing the headaches to become worse.
This is called medication overuse headache. One should try and gradually stop the painkillers for one week to see if your headache improves.
Many patients suffer with migraine which can have a huge impact on their work and social life.
As well as trying the above measures such as ensuring adequate water intake try the following supplements - magnesium, riboflavin and co-enzyme Q10.
Research shows since 1940s, our foods contain less magnesium; there's been a 38% drop in cheddar cheese, 21% in whole milk and 24% in vegetables. Green leafy veg such as spinach and kale, vegetables such as broccoli and squash, nuts and seeds are all good sources of magnesium.
Being restless, anxious with poor sleep may be a sign of magnesium deficiency. Magnesium is also good for heart health and very important for bone health. If you have osteoporosis a calcium, Vit D plus magnesium supplement is probably the best combination.
If you have tried all the above but need more help controlling your migraine attacks I suggest acupuncture which also works wonderfully for tension type headaches.
