History was made when the Gravesend to Tilbury Ferry began operating from the new £2.5 million pontoon on the town pier.
The ferry service is jointly funded by KCC, Gravesham council and Thurrock Council and has a history dating back to the 13th Century.
It operates as a passenger ferry service, every half hour between about 5.30am and 7pm, Monday to Saturday, excluding bank holidays.
The ferry is winning a growing fan club - more than 90,000 passenger journeys were made last year.
Kent County Council transport chief Bryan Sweetland said: "I welcome the launch of ferry services from the pontoon and the benefits it will bring.
"This pontoon is a tremendous asset for Gravesend and will allow visiting vessels to berth on both sides."
The pontoon is a floating landing stage that offers berthing and passenger access for the ferry and other vessels, including the Waverley paddle steamer.
Regular passenger Susan Ward said: "We have been using the ferry service for years and love it. I hope the new pontoon will encourage more people to make use of it."
Gravesham council leader Cllr John Burden said: "The operation of the Gravesend to Tilbury ferry from the Town Pier once again is another significant step forward in our regeneration plans which aim to re-focus attention on the river.
"Regular use of the new pontoon is a significant stride in the process which will be welcomed by everyone."
