Three men wielding hammers failed in a bid to rob a village post office on Monday.

The three burst into Fairby Stores in Hartley at about 11am. They made straight to the post office counter at the rear of the shop but, despite trying to smash two windows, the security glass stopped them getting in.

They escaped with a small amount of cash which they took from the shop till.

Jazbeer Nagra was alone in the post office section at the time. She said: "The first I knew was when I heard them. I pushed the alarm and then sat on the floor. I was covered in glass, frightened but not hurt."
