A man has described the emotional moment a woman’s eyes flickered as he helped try to save her after a horrific crash.
The woman, in her 30s, was seriously injured on Wednesday last week and taken to King’s College Hospital, London, in a semi-conscious state.
Two children in the car with her also sustained minor injuries after the incident in Milton Road, Gravesend.
A man in a second car was arrested at the scene on suspicion of being unfit to drive through drink or drugs.
Kevin Scallon was staying at the nearby Shamrock guest house that night when he heard three huge bangs just outside his window.
When he looked out he saw two crashed vehicles and a woman getting out of one of them.
He and colleagues Martin Birt and Jimmy McMullan rushed to help.
He said: “From what we could see, and what other witnesses saw, there was a crash and this lady’s car was knocked into some railings by the traffic lights.
“It ricocheted off and skidded into railings on the other side of the road, and then hit the wall of the Shamrock.
“I saw the woman getting out the car. One of my colleagues ran downstairs, I grabbed a duvet and pillows and followed behind him. She was stood on the pavement, but just before we reached her, she collapsed.
“She wasn’t breathing. Three of us tried to find her pulse but were getting nothing. We all thought she was dead.”
As emergency services made their way, ambulance staff told Mr Scallon, an electrician, over the phone how to perform CPR.
He said: “They just told me to keep going until I was exhausted. Eventually she started to come back round, her eyes flickered. It was very emotional.”
During the chaos, the woman lost an earring, which 45-year-old Mr Scallon picked up and is keeping safe. He is hoping to make contact with her to return it.
When told the woman’s injuries were not life-threatening, he said: “I’d love to see her, I’m over the moon that she’s OK. It was all very traumatic.
“We all did everything we could. Some people were looking after the children, and I was concentrating on the CPR. I’m just glad I could help, I was at the right place at the right time.”
The two children were said to be crying at the roadside and were looked after by passers-by until the police arrived and they were put safely into the back of the police car.
The injured woman has since been discharged from hospital and is recovering at home.
Robert Stronghill, 39, of The Terrace, Gravesend, was arrested on suspicion of being unfit through drink or drugs and later charged with failing to provide a specimen for analysis. He has been bailed to appear at Medway Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, November 8.
