The people of Gravesend awoke to the sight of about 20 caravans, up to six horses and numerous dogs in a field between a family restaurant and a supermarket this morning.
Travellers moved onto land off Coldharbour Road, close to Toby Carvey and Morrisons, overnight.
About 20 shiny white caravans are parked on the grass as well as a number of other vehicles.

Up to six horses are tied up in the field, including two very young looking ones that were sheltering next to a small horsebox this morning.
Dogs could be heard barking in the makeshift camp.
Both police and Gravesham council believe the land is privately owned.
A police spokesman said officers would assist if needed.
