At Leisure King, it’s all about fun.
The events equipment hire firm has experienced massive growth since its inception six years ago.
It offers three key product lines – fun foods, fun activities and fun entertainment.
The foods range includes candyfloss machines, pick and mix stands, ice cream trikes, hot dog machines, chocolate fountains and doughnut machines, while the activities range from casinos, rodeo bulls and side stalls to a range of inflatable games such as human table football, bungee run and sumo wrestling suits.
It can also provide full entertainment packages for ‘It’s A Knockout’ and game show-themed events, as well as a selection of photo booths.
The Northfleet company serves private and business clients all over the south of England, and has a number of TV companies, celebrities and corporate companies on its books.
There are eight full-time contracted staff and 10 casual event crew workers. In the summer months, event crew numbers rise to as much as 25.
The increased business has led to the firm streamlining its booking and IT systems and reorganising the large warehouse that houses a vast amount of equipment. Staff training is paramount.
Leisure King also shows an innovative approach to product development.
The newest additions include an inflatable disco dome, a selfie pod photo booth and a hand-built crazy golf course.
Director Sarah Redpath said: “We are used to challenging requests, even though some can sometimes be quite odd.
“We got a call from Penguin, the book publishers. They wanted to hire our sweet cart but wanted sweets that would match the story of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
“So we searched for mint jujubes, exploding candy, hair toffee and a range of other odd-sounding sweeties.
“We managed to find the right options and helped brand the sweet card and sweetie labels to finish off the peculiar offering.”
The company supports local charity The Parents Consortium, which provides help to disabled children and their families in the area through advice, services and short breaks.
With a personal connection to the charity, directors Steve and Sarah enthusiastically help to plan fundraising events with free use of Leisure King equipment.
This year the company sponsored the charity’s Colour Dash Run in June, which raised more than £12,000. It also supplied a large amount of equipment for the Parents Consortium’s 10th anniversary.
Leisure King is just one of several companies to enter this year’s Dartford and Gravesham Business Awards.
