What batter way to celebrate the Potato Council’s National Chip Week than with some free chips?
The place to be today is Reliance Fish Bar in Queen Street, Gravesend, to pick up your free chips with the coupon below.
Owner Jack Kamenou, 47, took over running the shop from his father, George, and it has been in the town since 1920.
The award-winning chippy was voted in the top three across the South East and London in the National Fish and Chip Shop of the Year competition in 2012.
Jack said: “I think it’s the quality of what we serve that keeps people coming back. Cod and chips is our most popular.
“We’re the oldest in Gravesend and, I’d have thought, in Kent.
“We’ve got regulars that come in once a week, some of them for the past 60 years.
“We had a couple from Australia who hadn’t been in the town for 30 years and they were really pleased it was still here.
“We had another couple from America who had come over to see their parents and they couldn’t believe it was still here.
“I go on holiday and someone will say ‘What do you do?’ and I’ll say ‘I run a fish and chip shop in Gravesend’ and they’ll go ‘Oh, the Reliance?’ It’s crazy.”
The shop – which also caters for vegetarians and those with gluten and wheat-free requirements – is open Monday to Thursday 11am-8pm, Friday 11am-9pm and Saturday 10.30am-9pm.
It holds charity nights with live music, raising thousands.
Historian Christoph Bull will be holding a Discover Gravesend slide show with fish and chip supper at Reliance on Monday, March 3 from 6pm.
Tickets are £10 from the Reliance.
