TWO Kent sisters have sung their way into Virginian hearts with their own special tribute to Native American princess Pocahontas.

Singer/songwriters Charley and Hattie Webb, from Sevenoaks, topped the bill at a concert in Jamestown held at the weekend (12/13) to remember the 400th anniversary of the first permanent English settlement in North America.

It came just a few days after the Queen's historic visit to the place acknowledged as the birthplace of the United States.

The Webb Sisters wowed a 10,000-strong audience in Anniversary Park, close to the site of the original 17th century fort built by those early adventurers, including some from Kent.

The talented duo were given a standing ovation after singing a song they wrote in honour of Pocahontas, the Native American princess who married settler John Rolfe and later sailed to England to meet the royal family.

Pocahontas died on the voyage home at Gravesend and is buried in the town’s St George’s Church. The sisters, who later met members of the eight original Native American tribes, are planning to record the song.

Charley and Hattie said how moved they had been by the warm reception, and the presence of so many Native Americans in the audience.

Graham Webb, the girls’ father and former hairdressing entrepreneur, and their mother Mandy were in the audience. Mr Webb was understandably delighted with his daughters’ reception and performance.

He said: "They were an absolute hit They twice spoke up for Kent, their home county in England. It was a hugely memorable event and I was so pleased to be part of it."

Kent VIPs attended the event, including Lord Bruce-Lockhart, former leader of Kent County Council, Cllr Alex King, KCC deputy leader, and Sandra Matthews-Marsh, chief executive of Kent Tourism Alliance.
