Gravesend kickboxing sensation Phoebe Cumiskey has her eyes set on Olympic glory after sweeping aside all and sundry on her road to World Championship success.
Only she won’t be able to use her legs to do the sweeping this time as 14-year-old Phoebe now has her heart set on the boxing ring following news her gym, Star Kickboxing, is to get its England Boxing licence.
It means the “Mighty Atom” will only be able to use her fists of course, although any of her 40 opponents so far will testify that will only spell trouble for future challengers.
Trainers knew Phoebe was a cut above the field from the moment she swung her first punches in the gym, and Paul Haworth, chief instructor at the gym in Lower Shorne, is convinced she has the necessary skills.
“The first time I saw her at training, straight away you could see that she was going to be good,” he said.
“I would never have guessed she was going to be this good but she’s come on leaps and bounds.
“She’s always in the gym, she’s always training the hardest but you can see she’s got that natural ability and she’s got the heart as well.
“She can go as far as she wants to. I’ve no doubt in my head.
“She’s only lost one fight and that one fight we know that she could win if we get a rematch."
Despite world championship successes, it’s that one defeat that Phoebe treasures as among her best experiences.
“I fought a girl from Holland,” she recalls.
“I lost, but it was such an experience because I only had 4 K-1 fights and she had around 70 K-1 fights, so I was proud of myself to get in the ring with someone with that much experience, and it was a cracking fight.
“I had my first title fight when I was 9 or 8, and I fought a girl a stone and a half heavier than me.
My dad’s said since then I’m like a lion - I’ve got the heart of a lion and I won’t give up.
“I’ve won everything I could wish I’d won, and now I want to make the Olympics in boxing. I want to be the best. I want to represent England and fight for our country.”
