A lawyer and campaigner who decided to do an at-home DNA test has been united with his newfound extended family – three years after the death of his mum.
Media personality Peter Stefanovic and his late mum Aileen decided to do a MyHeritage DNA test several years ago to learn more about their ancestry.
Aileen never knew who her dad was and had been raised under the guise her grandparents were her parents.
Peter said: “My mum took the test out of curiosity about her ethnic background”.
The results revealed a match with Victoria, Peter's half-aunt, who also didn’t know her biological father.
Despite growing up unaware of each other's existence, Victoria lived just a 20 minute drive away from Peter in Gravesend.
Peter was also matched with two biological uncles who shared similar stories of paternal abandonment.
Now, the extended family has come together and bridged the gap of decades of separation.
Peter shared a photo of the group on X, formerly Twitter, and says thousands of people have reached out to him since after it went viral.
He wrote: “This is simply amazing! My mother sadly died three years ago not knowing her father.
“Through DNA testing I have tonight met the two brothers and sister she never knew she had and my six wonderful cousins & their families. Just incredible.”
Broadcaster and media personality Carol Vorderman commented: “Oh wow Peter that's extraordinary”, while others congratulated him on discovering his new-found family.
