Lifeboat crews, a fire boat and the coastguard were called after a large out-of-control bonfire was spotted by a cargo ship captain.

Gravesend RNLI were sent to the scene at Lower Hope Reach, near Cliffe, late last night.

Thames commander, Liam Sidders said: “The call was made by a cargo ship to London VTS (vessel traffic services) at 11.10pm.

“We arrived on the South Shore of the River Thames five minutes later.”

The lifeboat crew saw a group of people with a large bonfire that was no longer under control.

Mr Sidders added: “With us being in communication with HM Coastguard it was noted additional assistance was required'.

“We remained on the scene giving vital updates until the other agencies arrived and the fire was under control and eventually extinguished.

“The captain of the passing cargo ship did the right thing to notify London VTS. If a member of the public ever spots a danger on or near the River Thames, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
