Despite the majority of locals proud to be English, an overwhelming majority of them think that the best years of England are in the past. Only 15% of people from Gravesham and Dartford thought the best years are in the future, slightly lower than the English average of 17%.
When asked whether they think they can influence local decisions in democracy, only 20% of residents in both towns thought they could make a difference, compared to the 74% who thought they couldn’t make a difference at all.
These results come after the BBC revealed that young people are less likely to feel proud to be English than people of the older generation.
YouGov surveyed over 20,000 people and found that 72% of over 65s were proud to be English. Almost double of the 45% of youngsters 18-24 who felt proud of their nationality.
