A man has been jailed for 13-and-a-half years for the "dreadful" sex abuse of a young girl.
Alan Clarke, 31, of Pier Road, Gravesend, was arrested in November 2013 and later charged with causing or inciting a girl to engage in sexual activity and three counts of sexual assault. He was convicted by a jury in December.
Maidstone Crown Court heard he was arrested after the victim told her mother what had happened to her.
Prosecutor Edmund Fowler said Clarke, 30, swore the girl to secrecy. He denied any wrongdoing, claiming the girl had lied.
Catherine Donnelly, defending, said on Friday Clarke was immature but had been a model prisoner while on remand and had taken the opportunity to educate himself.
"I ask not to impose a sentence that will crush him," she added.
Judge Charles Macdonald QC said he had no doubt Clarke presented a risk of future harm because he had "no insight at all" into his offending.
"I have read her personal statement and the effects are what one would expect,” said the judge.
"For these dreadful offences you will receive suitable punishment which protects members of the public."
Clarke’s name will appear on the sex offenders’ register indefinitely and a sexual offences prevention order was made for 20 years.
He will be barred from working with children and vulnerable adults.
Investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Jayne Thomas of Kent Police’s public protection unit, said: "I respect the judge’s sentencing in this particular matter, as well as the duty carried out by the jury – such trials are wholly unpleasant to have to be a part of.
"The sentence reflects the seriousness of his crimes. He will also be required to register as a sex offender upon his eventual release, providing further reassurances to the community.
"Kent Police’s absolute focus is the victim in such matters, as well as providing them with the justice they so rightly deserve in order to have some closure and move forward with their lives. I wish this brave young victim and family the very best for the future.
"I would urge those who have experienced abuse to report it to police, you will be treated with respect and dignity at all times."
