They met at a New Year’s Eve party in Gravesend in 1954 – and immediately fell for each other.
Fast-forward to 2016, and Richard and Betty Faint are celebrating 60 years of happy marriage.
Richard, 88, and Betty, 84, have been inseparable since that first meeting almost 63 years ago.
In the weeks that followed, whenever Betty spotted Richard cycling ahead of her, she would pedal as fast as she could to catch up for a chat.
If she was in front, she would drop back to see him.
Both lived in Gravesham back then, when Richard worked as a pen, paper and drawing board draughtsman at Wiggins Teape paper mill in Dartford and Betty was at the Co-op offices in Harmer Street, Gravesend.
Ever since their marriage at the since demolished St James’ Church in Gravesend they have lived in the same home in Riverview Park, Northfleet.
It is there that they raised three daughters – Wendy, Carol and Linda – and have since become grandparents to two boys and two girls – David, Darren, Leanne and Natalie.
Wendy was keen to pay tribute to her parents in light of their diamond anniversary, which was celebrated with friends and family.
“In today’s society it is not unusual to hear of yet another couple heading for divorce,” she said.
“Mum and dad – you are never happier than when you have your family around you and we want you to know you are dearly loved by all the family in the UK and Australia.
“We are so very proud to congratulate you on 60 happy years of married life together.”
As well as sharing a celebratory cake, the couple showed the family photos from their special day along with Betty’s wedding dress, which she has treasured all these years.
