A 64-year-old has been charged after the windows and doors of a council building were smashed.

Police officers were called to reports of damage to Gravesham Civic Centre, in Gravesend, earlier this month.

The windows and sliding doors at the front and back of the building, in Windmill Street, were hit seemingly multiple times, leaving the glass smashed and cracked.

Members of the public said it looked as though they had been broken with a hammer but this has not been confirmed.

Following initial inquires, including reviewing CCTV footage, officers arrested a 64-year-old man at the start of June.

Neil Burt, of no fixed address, was later charged with criminal damage.

He pleaded guilty at Medway Magistrates' Court and was remanded to appear before Maidstone Crown Court on July 4 for sentencing.

The premises are home to Gravesham council and are used by many members of the public.

They are also shared by The Woodville cinema and theatre complex.

In October, the building was also vandalised in the same way with around 40 “smashes” being counted, totaling £30,000 of damage.

The costs to repair Civic Centre this time around have not been confirmed.
