More support is needed for a rally at the House of Commons highlighting concerns of residents about the street lights switch-off, according to a leading campaigner.
Tina Brooker, of The Warren, Gravesend, has joined forces with others fighting to have overnight lighting reinstated immediately across Kent, and also with other counties experiencing the same local authority initiatives.
Protestors are planning to rally outside Parliament on Wednesday, March 25.
Kent residents are being urged to take part, despite council chiefs’ dramatic u-turn on its own Safe and Sensible initiative and its decision to now install LED technology and revert to all-night lighting.
Miss Brooker claims this announcement has led to residents mistakenly believing the switch-on is imminent, and therefore the need for the rally is as important as ever.
“I think the LED announcement took the wind out of the sails as people seem to think it is happening soon,” said the 52-year-old legal secretary.
“But we have no idea of the timeframe for this. It could be two, three, even four years down the line and as far as I’m concerned that is still unacceptable.
“Lighting should be restored immediately.”
The rally has been spearheaded by concerned residents in Essex, and Miss Brooker is now trying to organise a Kent contingency.
They are expected to congregate with placards on the green opposite St Stephen’s Entrance from 11am.
