A Mercedes driver who was pulled over by police because of a query over insurance was found to have cocaine in his system.

Mindaugas Norvydas was stopped by officers in Mounts Road, Greenhithe, because they wanted to check to see if he had insurance to drive the vehicle.

However, after being stopped, officers asked Norvydas to do a roadside drug test which proved positive and he was arrested on suspicion of drug driving.

After blood tests it was established the 36-year-old had 349 micrograms of cocaine per litre of blood. The legal limit is 10.

Norvydas, of East Hill, South Darenth, Dartford, was charged with drug driving and admitted the offence when he appeared before magistrates in Medway on Wednesday, March 29.

James Nichols, prosecuting, told the court it happened on September 8, last year.

Mr Nichols added: "The defendant was stopped over a query about his insurance and was asked to do a drug swipe and was found to be over the limit.

"He's of previous good character."

The court also heard Norvydas worked at various locations across the area and needed to drive to be able to work.

However, magistrates banned him from driving for 12 months and fined him £400 and ordered he pay a victim surcharge of £160 and £85 costs.

Norvydas was not charged in relation to being insured on the vehicle.
