A security officer’s sweet treat from Morrisons for his girlfriend took a sour turn when a fly was found buried in it.

Andrew Longmore went to the branch in Coldharbour Road, Northfleet, on his way home on Monday (October 16).

The 27-year-old had decided to surprise his girlfriend, Katie Connolly, by getting her a cream profiterole sundae from the fresh dessert shelf.

However, it wasn’t the only surprise the 23-year-old had, as upon giving Katie the treat at the door at their home in Larkfields, Northfleet, she immediately noticed the bug squished between the cream and the side of the tub.

Andrew said: “You can see how it hasn’t been opened and the stuff has just been poured over it.

“I took it back and showed it to the woman behind the customer service desk and she looked absolutely shocked.

“But she just told me to go to the back swap it for two more and let her know as I leave.

“I know it’s not their fault individually, they’re part of a team, but a sorry would’ve been nice.”

Katie posted a picture of the dessert pot online and received comments from others who said they’d had similar issues when buying items from the store.

Andrew continued: “It’s just hygiene. If I wanted to buy a fly I would’ve just bought a bin bag.

“An apology would be nice but mainly I want to make sure their food is healthy for others.

“No one knows what’s going on behind closed doors and this isn’t something you expect to happen to you but now it has, it needs something done about it.”

A Morrisons spokesman said: "This is an isolated incident and we are in touch with the customer to apologise that this item did not meet our usual high standards.

“All of our fresh Market Street counters have measures in place to prevent flies coming into contact with our food but as a precaution we are carrying out a full review of our Gravesend store."
