Police had signalled a Ford Fiesta to stop in Lynton Road, Gravesend, at about 2.30am yesterday.

The car drove off from patrols and then stopped in Princes Street.

Police said the driver and a passenger, both men, got out of the car and fled.

Patrols conducted a search, assisted by the police helicopter.

One man was later found under the pier off West Street, Gravesend, stuck in mud and the RNLI was called to rescue him.

He was taken back to Gravesend lifeboat station, where he was later picked up by an ambulance.

Another man was arrested close by.
