A music hut has been created in a school in memory of a teaching assistant after her daughter took the same job at her mum’s old school.
Jass’s Music Hut at Copperfield Academy in Dover Road, Gravesend was designed by Kam Virdee as a way of keeping her mum’s memory alive.
Kam, 31, said she started working as a TA at the school last year and decided it was something she really want to do after staff spoke to her about their memories of her mum.
Jass worked as a TA in the nursery from 2000 until 2005 when ill health forced her to give up the job she loved. She passed away from cancer a year later at the age of just 37.
Kam, who was just 13 when her mum passed away, said: “Mum worked hard to further her career and got her teaching qualification just before receiving the sad news that her cancer had returned and had spread throughout her body and was told the devastating news that she didn’t have long to live.”
“Mum had to make the hard decision to leave her job in mid 2005 and sadly passed away in May, 2006.”
She added: “I began to work at Copperfield Academy in January last year and I just knew from being there that I wanted to do something in memory of my mum as there are a few members of staff who currently work there today who still remember her and the soft warm energy that she had about her.
Kam said she approached her manager Ben Clark with her idea and he gave her a hut in the nursery grounds.
“I wanted to create something magical and meaningful with it so I turned it into Jass’s Music Hut,” Kam said.
“A place where I could give back to the children where they can explore, learn and have fun.
“Mum loved and adored her job and to have worked so hard to create such a beautiful space in her memory means the world to me, my siblings and her grandchildren who she never got to meet.
“Mum will always be a part of Copperfield and I’m so grateful to Ben and all of the nursery staff who have supported me with this. I can't wait to see the children enjoy the magical space that's been created.”
