Netball bounces out of borough

DO you remember the days of short skirts, ice-cold legs and quick passes?

One group of netball veterans raided the photo albums to discover their netball heyday following the sad realisation that the game has all but disappeared in the borough.

Adult teams in Gravesham now have to travel to Medway for a game because no-one was willing to take over when organisers of an amateur league stepped down.

Members of the original Gravesend Netball League, which began in about 1950, were upset by the news at their first reunion last month.

Teams were made up of school leavers, groups of friends and even work colleagues. Most businesses and factories, the ladies said, had their own sports clubs and facilities, and even provided some teams with kit.

By the end of the league some 30 teams were registered, three times the number that started more than 50 years ago, and the network had expanded to three divisions, with matches held weekly from September to April.
