Plans for a new £34 million leisure centre have received the go-ahead.
Last night, Gravesham council considered the proposals to demolish the existing Cascades Leisure Centre, in Gravesend, and neighbouring Regan's Bar to build a new facility.
The planning committee unanimously agreed that the decision should be delegated to officers to grant permission to the project.
The application was recommended for approval last month, after the council submitted its proposals to planning officers in December.
The centre in Thong Lane will include a 25m pool, 17m learner pool, an aqua play and water flume area, poolside steam and sauna, spectator viewing area, a sports hall with six courts and tiered seating, a multi-level soft play zone, a 'clip n climb' zone, party and community rooms and a café, all on the ground floor.
On the first floor, there will be two squash courts, two multi-use studios, a spin bike studio and a 100-station fitness suite.
Outside facilities would include a children’s play area, an active play area, an outdoor gym and trim trail, as well as a tennis and netball court.
The report to committee members highlighted the proposal has the support of Sport England and three letters of support had been received, with just one objection.
Cllr John Burden, leader of Gravesham council, said: "This decision is a very important step on the road to a new leisure centre for the borough and was by no means a formality.
"It was considered in detail by both planning officers and members of the planning committee, who took into account comments from a range of statutory consultees and local people.
"This modern new leisure centre will provide local residents with the facilities they want and deserve, and will be built to the highest environmental standards, ensuring it contributes to our net zero ambitions."
Cllr Burden added the next step would be to engage a main contractor to construct the building.
He said: "We have already held provisional conversations with a number of contractors with strong track records in this field and I am confident we will be entering into an agreement with the right one following the tender procedure in the very near future.
"I hope current and potential users of our leisure centre are as excited as I am that the promise of a new, modern, family-orientated centre is now closer than ever."
