The gurdwara in Gravesend has a new president after the first election at the temple for more than a decade.

Nearly 4,000 people voted Davinder Singh Bains as the new leader.

He represented the Shinde (A1) faction and gained 65% of the ballots cast defeating Ajit Singh Clare by 1,094 votes.

Mr Bains said: “I am very humbled to have been elected to this position.

"I am totally committed to working alongside my administration not just with the Sikh Community but other faiths across the borough and around Kent.

“We pride ourselves for the excellent community relations enjoyed in Gravesham and the gurdwara has a key role to play in this.”

The Sikh community in Gravesham is one of the largest in the UK, making up more than 10% of the population of the borough.
