Ricky Shakes handed Ebbsfleet a much-needed away win at Newport County in Blue Square Bet Premier as Liam Daish's side clung on for all three points in South Wales.
The midfielder's 20th minute goal was enough to give Fleet a welcome morale boost following last weekend's shock FA Cup exit at Redbridge.
Sloppy Newport defending allowed Guyanese winger Shakes (pictured) to follow up a Calum Willock shot for the only goal of the game after home keeper Danny Potter failed to cling on.
But Ebbsfleet were made to weather a storm in the second half when Newport hit the woodwork three times. Exiles striker Sam Foley struck a post and Fleet keeper Preston Edwards tipped over from Danny Rose's shot.
Newport substitute Robbie Matthews then squirmed a late header wide as the hosts failed to find an equaliser.
How important a result was this in Fleet's season following last weekend's shock FA Cup exit?
