has today, Labour MP for Dartford pictured top right,Dr Howard Stoate announced he will no longer submit a claim allows MPs to claim for costs associated with staying away from their main home.whichfor the Parliamentary additional costs allowance,
But Adam Holloway, Conservative MP for Gravesham pictured bottom right, has so far made no indication he will follow suit. Mr Holloway, whose constituency is 25 miles from the Commons, claimed £22,500 in 2007/08, almost the entire £23,800 annual limit.
Dr Stoate's decision follows a Commons vote which means MPs whose constituencies fall entirely within a 20 mile radius of Westminster will no longer be able to make claims from the ACA as of next year.
Dartford is not one of the constituencies affected by the ruling but Dr Stoate, who has claimed about £56,000 out of a possible £88,000 for his London flat since 2004, has decided to voluntarily give it up. His decision is effective from the start of this financial year on April 1.
Dr Stoate said: “I wanted to abide by the spirit of the motion which is that MPs with constituencies next to the border of Greater London should no longer submit additional costs allowance."
Of the ongoing national expenses scandal, he added: “I can well understand the public’s anger about the system we have in place now. When money is tight and people’s job prospects uncertain people have every right to be angry when they hear story after story after story about the things that the current system has allowed MPs to make claims for.
“It is abundantly clear this system is deeply flawed and has to be reformed as a matter of urgency."
Adam Holloway was unavailable for comment.
