A beautician is offering a new American craze from her home business – welded permanent jewellery.
From her studio in Springhead Parkway, Northfleet, Ruby Black is soldering gold and silver chains onto her clients.
The 24-year-old owner of RMB Beauty said: "As well as offering facial treatments, I've begun offering permanent jewellery.
"It's only just started coming over from the US and it's basically jewellery that is welded on instead of being able to be taken on and off with a clasp.
"I never really take my jewellery off, I always have my rings on and my bracelets.
"So people like me would benefit from having permanent jewellery."
To ensure the jewellery will never come off Ruby takes an open link of a bracelet, anklet or necklace, pushes it together with pliers and then solders it together with a special machine.
She continued: "The first thing people always say when you mention the idea is the fact that jewellery needs to be removed for certain hospital appointments and scans.
"That isn't a problem at all, I can safely remove the jewellery, without damaging it, for free and then re-solder it at no extra charge."
Although the service is becoming popular in London, Ruby says just she and one other business in Maidstone are the only people to offer the jewellery in the county.
She explained: "All the stock I buy is from America. But it's slowly making its way over to the UK and I'm glad to be one of the first to bring it over here."
All of Ruby's training for the welding machine and service was done online.
She says the machine isn't at all as technical as it looks.
When using the device both herself and her clients need to wear welding goggles to protect their eyes.
She said: "All you have to do is make sure there's a circuit and then once it's on the point of the weld, it will do a little spark and it's done.
"I've done more than 15 now and the people who want them usually pair it with a sentimental thing."
Some of the people who benefit from the permanent jewellery are best friends looking for 'bestie bracelets'.
Ruby even had a mother and daughter come for the service.
She said: "I've had a mum and her little girl come along, her daughter was only three so that was really cute, they got matching anklets.
"People are also getting gift vouchers, especially for Christmas."
Ruby can weld gold and silver chains in anklet, bracelet and necklace designs.
She added: "All the jewellery I use is hallmarked so it's not going to turn green or anything, it's made to wear all the time.
"You can shower in it, swim in it, use tan, moisturise, the lot."
The permanent necklaces start from £100 up to 20 inches and the bracelets are £90 each.
However, if on the day of your appointment you decide you want more than one, they get cheaper as you stack.
