An Audi has been been reported driving at speed on the wrong side of the A2 with police in pursuit on the other side of the road.
The blue car was said to be weaving on and off the hard shoulder, heading towards London on the coast-bound side of the motorway.
Four of five police cars on the London-bound side are believed to have been chasing the driver.
An eyewitness, who did not want to be named, reported seeing the Audi hurtling towards him as he passed Gravesend.
"I was driving coast-bound on the motorway, just about to pull into the slow lane when I saw this Audi come racing towards me.
"There was dust flying everywhere, and it just missed me by a couple of metres.
"It was crazy."
A police spokesman confirmed the chase.
He said: "At around 5.50pm a blue-coloured Audi reportedly collided with another vehicle at the junction of Gravesend Road and Pear Tree Lane.
"The Audi made off from the scene and was then seen travelling London-bound on the coast-bound A2 carriageway.
"Kent Police located the vehicle in Betsham at 6.24pm and officers continue to make enquiries in the area."
