Power cut repairs too late for some

WORK has been completed to replace a damaged transformer after a spate of power cuts in Gravesend.

However EDF Energy Networks said it cannot guarantee it will stop blackouts in the town centre.

An EDF spokesman said: "Work to install a new transformer and switching gear at the local substation in the area has been completed.

"We are unable to guarantee an uninterrupted power supply as faults can occur for a variety of reasons, some of which are beyond our control. However, we are constantly investing in our networks to ensure they are robust and cater for demand."

Businesses, shoppers, and Gravesham council demanded action from EDF after New Road and surrounding streets were plunged into darkness several times last month.

Unfortunately, the repairs have come too late for dozens of traders who claim to have lost thousands of pounds since the problem began last year.

Under rules laid out by regulator Ofgem, some may be able to claim a guaranteed standard payment of £50 if it took EDF more than 18 hours to restore power.

Traders who have experienced four or more power cuts in a year, each of more than three hours, may also be eligible to a goodwill payment of £50.
