Pupils tucked into the fruits of their labour at the launch of their school’s new edible garden.
Children from Ebbsfleet Green Primary school in Ebbsfleet, made healthy foods including carrot muffins and apple crumble and sold them at the open day with profits going straight back into the project.
As part of the launch on April 26 the youngsters also spent time in class selecting recipes using ingredients that could one day also be harvested from the edible garden.
The garden, which was funded, designed and constructed with support from Ebbsfleet Development Corporation (EDC), is aimed at offering opportunities for the youngsters to acquire new skills and enjoy physical activity as well as developing their confidence and enjoying the benefits of gardening and nature.
Mark Pullin, EDC’s director of planning and place, said: “We are pleased to support Ebbsfleet Green’s new edible garden.
“We hope it provides a fun and engaging space for students to learn about the joys of growing food and the benefits this has on the community and planet.”
The edible garden project has been a community affair with the school’s extra-curricular gardening club instrumental in developing the area.
Pupils have been planting and sowing seeds for seasonal vegetables during the year, while plants have been donated by the community.
At the launch of the garden, Joshua Croucher, Ebbsfleet Green Primary’s interim headteacher said: “As a school, we are very proud of all our children’s enthusiasm, creativity and their responsibility towards the new edible garden.
“We hope this project will continue to grow as the school flourishes and that it can grow with the community.”
