THE mother of a teenager whose prank led to a complaint to police about the Prime Minister’s wife says he had no reason to apologise.
Miles Gandolfi, 17, from Orpington, a member of Gravesham Fencing Club, made national headlines when he made a two-fingered rabbit ears gesture as he stood behind Cherie Blair, at the UK School Games where he won a bronze medal in fencing.
The next day police turned up at the sporting event in Glasgow to interview the youngster after somebody complained about Mrs Blair’s reaction to his joke.
She tapped him on the back in mock rage and reportedly said: “It’s lucky I have a sense of humour.”
Miles’ mother Catherine said the family, who live in Orlestone Gardens, Chelsfield, had been hounded by the media since the incident.
“We thought it was a hoot,” she said, “but we’re getting a bit fed up with it now.”
Mrs Gandolfi said she would like to know who made the complaint to police.
She said: “It’s ridiculous. I don’t know why someone would complain. It was just a laugh. He was in high spirits. The next day, an official ushered us behind the scenes and said the police were involved. We thought, 'God, what’s Miles done?”
She added that reports her son had apologised for the prank were wrong.
“He thinks it’s crazy,” she said, “he doesn’t agree there was anything to be sorry for.”
Downing Street said that police had taken statements from Miles and Mrs Blair’s protection officer and that no further action was planned.
