Crew from Gravesend RNLI lifeboat had to fight off a man involved in a police chase when they rescued him from the water.
They were out on exercises at about 4.40pm yesterday when they were asked to head to Erith Causeway to reports of a man in the water.
It was reported he leapt in the Thames while on the run from police and was known to have a history of violence.
A Gravesend RNLI spokesman said: "Once on scene the casualty was located, still in the water in an agitated state and holding onto a throw bag deployed by shore side officers.
"With a history of violent behaviour, a decision whether to wait for Marine Police officers to arrive and assist or effect a rescue had to be made.
"With the casualty becoming increasing agitated and cold, pleading to be removed from the water, and agreeing not to resist in any way, it was decided to recover the casualty without further delay.
"The casualty was recovered, but became belligerent and started trying to fight with the crew whilst being taken to the causeway."
He added: "Two officers from the Marine Police Launch had to assist in landing him onto the causeway.
"Once the casualty was handed over into police care, the lifeboat was then released from service."
Officers from Bexley Police were called to an allegation of assault outside the Sign Post on Erith High Street.
They were redirected to James Watt Way, Erith, to a man in the Thames.
The Coastguard, Met Air Support and Marine Support Units also responded.
Gravesend RNLI were on the scene and retrieved a 30-year-old man from the river.
He was taken to hospital with minor injuries before being arrested on suspicion of affray and bailed while inquiries continue.
