Ebbsfleet found themselves one place off the foot of the Blue Square Premier Division table following their 2-0 defeat at Rushden on Saturday.
The Fleet were beaten by a Aaron O'Connor brace which helped Rushden to make sure of a place in the end of season play-offs.
Rushden were always in the driving seat and took the lead in the 26th minute when Craig Farrell’s pass found O'Connor and he drove the ball home.
Magno Vieira, Moses Ashikodi and Scott Ginty all had chances for Fleet but couldn’t get their side back on terms.
Fleet keeper Lance Cronin (pictured) kept his side in the game when he saved Paul Terry’s penalty.
But the result was put beyond doubt when O'Connor scored again on 70 minutes.
Eastbourne Borough moved above Fleet and out of the relegation zone with a 3-1 victory over York.
