A mum has demanded an apology from her son’s school after he was put in isolation and threatened with exclusion when staff took exception to his hair.
Ebbsfleet Academy Year 10 pupil Liam Luxford was taken out of lessons with a friend because their hairstyles were found to be contrary to school rules.
The 14-year-old, of Alamein Road, Swanscombe, removed from class and threatened with a detention unless he was collected to have his hair trimmed.
A letter was also sent to Liam’s mum Rhonda Lincoln explaining the teenager could face exclusion unless he fully co-operated with the sanction.
Liam returned to classes in the afternoon after he was picked up by his mum and taken home to have his hair cut by his elder sister.
Rhonda said she was baffled by the school’s decision as Liam has had the same hairstyle since he started term in September.
But when she collected him from school she was told the style was too long on top and too short at the sides.
She said: “I got a call completely out of the blue saying I needed to come to school to collect Liam because his haircut is too extreme. I can’t believe it.
“I could understand if it was a pink Mohican but it’s a normal hair cut.
“I had to leave work early and Liam was taken out of the classroom. He goes to school to learn so how can he when he’s not in lessons?
“If he was off sick they would be the first demanding medical certificates yet when he is at school they take him out.
“I’m very angry and I just think it’s pathetic. Liam is in an important school year.
“I think we deserve an apology.”
She is also angry after Liam’s 12-year-old sister Letitia was kept behind after school for failing to sign her planner.
Ms Lincoln’s partner Paul Young added: “We think enough is enough. The school need to take a look at themselves.
According to school rules hair must be worn in a simple style with “unconventional” or “elaborate” styles banned along with bleaching, coloured streaks, shaved patterns and hair extensions.
For boys, haircuts must be no shorter than a number two with mohicans, tram lines and indents all prohibited.
The school has yet to respond.
