On this day in 2003 Britain recorded its hottest day ever as temperatures soared to 38.1C in Gravesend.

The heatwave took the town; and the UK, to the top of the weather charts since records began in 1875.

Gravesend Promenade was flooded with tourists and residents keen to catch a tan, but while the sun is shining over Gravesend this morning, it's safe to say we won't be breaking any new records... yet.
