Drivers faced severe delays on the A2 due what is thought to have been a broken down vehicle and an earlier accident.

Tailbacks on the London-bound carriageway stretched from the incident at the A227 Tollgate Services turn-off at Gravesend back to junction 3 of the M2 for Chatham.

One lane was closed but traffic was already slow due to an earlier accident which was later moved to the hard shoulder.

Tailbacks were also been caused by a second accident involving a lorry and a car happened at 7.48am on the M2 London-bound, between junctions 4 and 3. No injuries have been reported.

Travel time through the delays on the A2 was about an hour at its worst.

Kent Police was called to a three-car collision on the A2 coastbound at 7.36am.

The incident took place close to the turn off for the A227 and no serious injuries have been reported.

Elsewhere, there have also been accidents on the M25 and on the M20.
