Kind-hearted sewers gave up their time to help make breast cancer patients a little more comfortable during treatment.

The volunteers were busy stitching all day to make the heart-shaped cushions for patients on cancer wards at Darent Valley and Medway Maritime Hospitals.

Craft group Sew2Gether which is based in Bean, organised a community day for others to join them and help sew hundreds of the items.

Member Edina Geering asked people to donate fabrics, sheets, duvet covers and stuffing so the group could make as many cushions as possible.

The “sewathon” which was fuelled by tea, coffee and cake was held on Saturday, at Bean Community Hall, High Street, Bean.

Mrs Geering said: “Lots of people responded to the plea for sheets, pillowcases and duvet covers, so that was just amazing.

“We were able to make 580 cushions and I can’t thank people enough, it was so good.

“I am overwhelmed by it.”
