Discount shoppers flocked to Gravesend town centre this morning as a new shop opened its doors.

Discount UK, which is owned by Poundworld Retail Ltd, began business today in New Road on the former site of Life and Style.

Hundreds of shoppers have already entered the shop which sells multi-purpose discount items includng food, drink and Halloween memorabilia.

Martyn Birks (left), marketing manager, said: "We like to think we are replacing Woolworths but with more vibrant products and a better range.

"There are other discount stores in the town but we're not frightened of the competition. We feel we have the biggest and best range of items in the UK."

Mr Birks was recently filmed on Channel 4's Undercover Boss and said his publicity has helped him in store openings.

He added: "I keep getting recognised because the programme is so powerful, it was a hell of an experience and I certainly learned a lot."
