Hundreds of people flocked to Gravesend’s historic borough market as it opened its doors after a £1.8 million renovation.
The market in the High Street has been closed for 10 months while building contractors Faithdean PLC transformed the hall, alongside a design team from Clay Architecture.
The restoration works were possible thanks to a grant from the government’s Coastal Communities Fund.
The draughty, drab hall is now light and welcoming.
Saturday's opening was marked with a festive fair.
Shoppers commented on how bright the building was, thanks to blue paint and the installation of roof lights. Permanent stalls and alcoves have also been created for traders to show off their wares.
The Mayor of Gravesham Cllr Greta Goatley led a parade from Community Square to the market before cutting a ribbon to officially open it.
Rachel Waite, from Dolly’s and Frankie’s Boutique, said: “It’s the first time we’ve been at the market.
“It’s been really busy, really successful. Some people prefer going to the High Street than places like Bluewater.
“We would love to do it again in the spring when it’s warmer.”
Matt Harman, 24, from Gravesend, said: “It’s looking pretty good. My parents used to run a cafe inside the market. It looks so much brighter now.”
Clare O’Brien, from Claranova Soaps and Scents, said: “The council has done really well and worked really hard. The market looks great. Everyone has been really supportive.”
Jackie Brinkley from I Dream Cakes said the market was busy all day.
There is still more to come. The finishing touches will be added in 2017 with a Market Café and the reopening of the old fish market to create a street food area.
