A team of office workers got busy with paintbrushes to transformed the bedroom of a poorly teenager from Gravesend.

Henry’s Angels, a group of staff from Henry Schein Dental in Gillingham, approached children’s hospice chYps to see if they could treat one of the families it supports.

Over the weekend, volunteers from the firm, armed with tins of paint, wallpaper, new lamps and cushions, set to work on the bedrooms of chYps patient 14-year-old Shardae O’Brien, from Gravesend and her sister Serena, 12.

The children’s service of EllenorLions Hospices has been caring for Shardae and her family since she was diagnosed with a brain tumour.

In just three days, the 10 volunteers, led by Doug Neff, transformed the rooms of the Old Road West home into a sanctuary for the siblings, complete with funky camper van wallpaper.

Mum Lisa Durant said: “The rooms look wonderful and the girls are so pleased.

“It would have been a huge strain on me both physically and financially to decorate their rooms so I am so grateful to Henry Schein for all their kindness and hard work.

“ChYps have done so much for our family and have been marvellous throughout Shardae’s care. They are always there with help and advice and Shardae loves going along to the chYps youth group.”

Henry’s Angels was formed in 2011 by Ellie Nightingale, Lyn Yorke and Lynsey van Wyk, with the goal of helping local causes in practical ways.

Ms Nightingale said: “It was a pleasure to work with such a lovely family. It was hard work but it was so worth it to see the look on their faces when the rooms were finished.

“All the materials were purchased from funds raised by Team Schein members in Gillingham. Their generosity has provided this very special makeover.

“ChYps is an incredible charity and it means so much to us to be able to bring some happiness into the lives of poorly children and their families.”
