COVERT cameras may be hidden inside taxis in parts of north Kent in a bid to reduce the number of drivers being attacked and passengers running off without paying.
A plan by North Kent Police also includes displaying special Cab Watch stickers in the front and rear of vehicles. When patrolling officers spotted the badges, they would stop drivers to make sure they are all right.
Police are also in talks with a specialist firm making glass partitions, common in black cabs, which can be fitted into saloon cars for extra security.
PC Steve Ridley, who runs North Kent Police's traffic management unit, said: "We are experiencing problems with Hackney Carriage drivers being assaulted and looking at various measures to help address that."
It is hoped the move will encourage more drivers to pick up fares at night - a time when many dread doing business and fear being attacked.
The tiny cameras will film any incident to provide police with the evidence needed to prosecute offenders. The initiative is due to be launched later this month and a group representing Hackney Carriage and private hire drivers will be formed.
