A recently bereaved family is calling on others to join them at the EllenorLions Hospices sponsored Twilight Walk.
Julie Crocker, of Riverview Park, Gravesend, will be taking part in the walk at Gravesend’s Cyclopark on Friday, September 19 with her daughters, Rosie, 20, and 17-year-old Laura Hobson, and several friends in memory of dad and grandad Roger Tomlinson.
Roger, who died in July after a four-year battle with cancer, was granted his dying wish to spend his final days at home, thanks to the help of EllenorLions Hospices.
Julie, 44, said: “As a family we had a lot of support from EllenorLions Hospices. Dad was determined to die in the comfort of his own home.
“When he was fearful, the nurses reassured him and they helped us to care for him. We knew we could call on them at any time, even if late at night.
“We’re so grateful for what they did, and by taking part in Twilight Walk we will be able to raise money to help the charity care for other families like us living locally. We really hope lots of other people will join ‘Team Roger’ in support of this fantastic local charity.”
Now in its sixth year, the event helps to raise much-needed funds for the north Kent charity so it can provide care to seriously ill adults and children and their families.
Walkers will have the choice of two challenges: they can do laps of the Cyclopark, or head out through Gravesend for an 8km circular walk, passing the hospice before returning back to the Cyclopark.
All participants will receive a free Twilight Walk T-shirt with a space on the back to write a message in support of the hospice or the name of a loved one.
Events manager Emma Whittington said: “We’d love to see you, your friends, colleagues and family on what is a great night supporting the work provided by EllenorLions Hospices and chYps, our children’s hospice at home. Whether you’re a keen athlete or simply like to stroll, the Twilight Walk is the perfect place to have fun while raising vital funds for your local hospice.
“We’re hoping for plenty of flashing lights, fancy dress, feather bowers, tutus, glitz, glamour, camaraderie and laughter.”
Former EastEnders actress Cheryl Fergison will be one of those taking part.
The actress, who is a patron of EllenorLions Hospices, said: “This will be my second time at Twilight Walk, and I hope to see lots of friendly faces at this year’s event. Come along for a Zumba warm-up and plenty of giggles as we raise much-needed funds for such a worthwhile local charity.”
Entry is £15 and walkers will also receive a goody bag and treats along the route, include Taywells ice cream. Registration on the night will be £20.
