First time market stallholders will be trading for a tenner in the town on Saturday (June 30) as part of National Market Day.

The initiative, backed by Gravesham Council, gives individuals, schools, college and university students and community groups the opportunity of "testing out" market trading on outdoor pitches under the canopy at Gravesend Market..

The event has been organised by the National Association of British Market Authorities in response to recommendations by retail guru Mary Portas on how to rejuvenate high streets.

Exisitng traders at the indoor market hope it will drum up more business, and believe such campaigns are vital to keep the market industry alive.

Stallholder Barry Reynolds said: "Markets are dying a death all over the country so it's good to be able to promote ourselves in this way.

"National Market Day is a good idea because the more people we can get to take stalls, the more shoppers will come to the market.

"And Gravesend market is definitely worth promoting seeing as it's been around since 1268."

Gravesend's National Market Day will also see Monica's Vintage Fayre taking place at the Old Town Hall with vintage and retro clothing and accessories, plus live entertainment and a vintage-style tea room.

Shoppers are also being urged to support independent retailers in the town as part of Independents' Day on Wednesday (July 4).

This national campaign champions shops that make villages, towns and cities special.

Gravesham Borough Council leader Cllr John Burden said: "It is important to for people realise how crucial the independent shops are to the vitality of the town. We are pleased to be involved in this promotion but our work continues not just on this day but every day."

More than 30 shops in the town are taking part and offering special promotions.
